Avionics Ground Power Checklist

Solution

Shortly after purchasing the Aspen PFD in the 182, the board elected to purchase a Ground Power unit for Avionics training in our planes.

The unit we purchased is compatible with any standard 28V aircraft electrical system.

While it will run avionics very well without draining the battery, IT CANNOT START THE ENGINE. It does not produce enough amperage. Please do not attempt to ground power start any of our planes using this unit as it will likely overload it. Just call the FBO and they will bring a power cart out to the plane.

Checklist:

1) Ensure Master switch is turned off in the plane.

2) Open the external ground power connection port on the plane.

3) Place the ground power box on the ground next to the plane in a dry place.

4) Connect the extension cord to one of the hangar power outlets.

5) Turn on the Ground Power unit

6) Plug it into the plane's ground power receptacle. You should hear a relay in the plane click.

The power is now on in the plane. Keep the master switch turned off. This will isolate the alternator and battery. At this point, you can turn on the avionics bus and the PFD if applicable.

Disconnecting:

1) Turn off the avionics bus and PFD in the plane. The master should stay off.

2) Unplug the extension cord on the Ground power unit and turn it off.

3) Unplug the Ground Power box from the plane's receptacle.

4) Close/Secure the receptacle hatch.

5) Roll up the extension cord and store it in the white utility box.
